My girlfriend’s dad said I shouldn’t propose because he didn’t want dark babies

Hello, I’m John an African American, and my girlfriend Naomi is Korean, so we’re an interracial couple.

At the time of this incident Naomi and I had been dating for 5 years, we met at a party a few years ago through mutual friends and just hit it off.

Over the past few years, Naomi has actually been my better half:

Making me grow into a better person,

Encouraging me to take risks and learn new things (she even taught me some Korean),

I knew she was the one I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. So, I was going to propose to her.

It took me 5 months to plan everything out. I wanted to make it special, something she would remember forever, something that really showed how much I cared about her.

Now with all the planning out of the way, being the very traditional guy that I am, I thought it would be a great idea to ask Naomi’s parents for their daughter’s hand in marriage before I proposed.

The Unexpected Twist: A Conversation with Naomi’s Father

It was a Thursday morning, Naomi had gone to work, and I called her mom, Sook, to ask if I could come over to talk to them about something; she gladly invited me over. After the 2-hour drive, I made it to their house and was welcomed in by Sook and Kwan, Naomi’s parents.

After some light talking on different topics, I brought up the real reason I was there, I said [with all the confidence I could muster]:

“Mr. Kwan and Mrs. Sook, your daughter and I have been dating for 5 years now, and I believe she completes me. I want to propose to her, and I am here to ask for your blessings and her hand in marriage.”

Unveiling the Truth: A Candid Conversation with Naomi

The next day Naomi went to work, and I worked from home. For hours I thought of how I was going to talk to her about what her dad had said; also, without revealing the actual reason I was at her parent’s house.

Eventually, she got home, I sat her down and told her that yesterday I was driving past her parent’s neighborhood and decided to stop by to say “Hi”. [It was a horrible lie, but she bought it!].

I told her discussions came up about our relationship, and her father said he doesn’t want us to have dark babies.

She was shocked, and angry, but also looked confused. She didn’t say anything for about 20 seconds [I guess she was trying to wrap her head around it].
